Barren Island Volcano, situated in the Andaman Sea, is India's only active volcano. This remarkable geological feature lies within a volcanic belt at the intersection of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. The island spans about three kilometres in diameter, with a massive volcanic crater located roughly half a kilometre from the shore. The volcano features a 354-meter-high caldera with walls reaching up to 350 meters and has a history of explosive eruptions. The latest notable eruption started in September 2018 and ended in January 2022, leaving the summit crater with on-going heat and thermal anomalies. Known for its ash plumes, Strombolian explosions, and lava flows, Barren Island attracts significant scientific interest.
